Rockwell Automation Ushers in New Manufacturing Era with Flexible MES Solutions

Rockwell Automation, a global leader in industrial automation, has unveiled a series of strategic enhancements to its Manufacturing Execution System (MES) portfolio, introducing what it terms an "elastic MES" platform. Designed to address the evolving needs of modern manufacturers, the new offerings prioritize flexibility, scalability, and seamless integration across operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) environments.

The elastic MES platform is cloud-native and built to unify manufacturing operations, breaking down traditional silos that have long hindered visibility and agility. According to Rockwell’s 2025 State of Smart Manufacturing Report, 21% of manufacturing leaders cite integration challenges as a significant internal obstacle. Rockwell’s solution aims to eliminate these barriers by providing a modular, interoperable system that supports everything from materials management and production tracking to quality control and workforce connectivity.

Anthony Murphy, Vice President of Product Management at Rockwell Automation, emphasized the strategic shift: “DIY and disparate systems increase cost, risk, and complexity. Our elastic MES unifies critical applications across OT and IT on a cloud-native, resilient architecture that grows with our customers.”

Key features of the elastic MES portfolio include:

  • Purpose-built capabilities for discrete, hybrid, and regulated industries, ensuring compliance and traceability
  • Embedded AI and analytics to deliver predictive insights and support autonomous operations
  • Flexible deployment options, from cloud-only to hybrid edge-to-cloud configurations
  • Extensible design that integrates with existing systems and emerging technologies

The platform has already demonstrated tangible benefits for early adopters. A stationery and personal care manufacturer improved real-time production visibility using Plex MES, while a pharmaceutical developer enhanced operational efficiency with FactoryTalk® PharmaSuite®. David Rudofsky, CFO of Wonton Food Inc., noted that the system simplified compliance and reduced implementation time by minimizing customization needs.

Rockwell’s elastic MES strategy represents a significant step toward adaptive, future-ready manufacturing, empowering companies to scale capabilities efficiently and accelerate their journey toward autonomous operations.
